There are many coffee machines in the market today based on diverse methodologies. From a simple drip coffee machine to very sophisticated coffee makers are available for consumers to choose from. Filter, percolator, espresso and cappuccino are among the popular versions of this beverage. But many other derivations are also developed and consumed all over the world. Drip coffee maker is the original entity that served as the basis of all later versions of coffee machines. The method adopted therein is a very effective way of brewing coffee. Drip coffee makers are simple machines, easier to operate. Regular cleaning and preventive maintenance are also easier.
For a small family a coffee maker with 1 to 4 cups capacity is adequate. This smaller version will take time to complete the process. The water has to attain required temperature to enable the brewing process to commence. Modern coffee machines have innovative features. Removable water reservoir is a convenient feature in many models. It can be separated from the machine to fill up water or to clean periodically. Built-in grinder is yet another feature to make the process more efficient as well as to enhance the quality of the end product. Earlier models with separate grinders are found space consuming. Blades used in the grinders are also different. Originally, blade grinders were used, but they are found unsuitable for the reason that the coffee beans will get burnt due to the heat generated, adversely affecting the color and aroma of the coffee. Later they were replaced by burr grinders to eliminate the problem.
Modern coffee makers are featured with thermal pots to make the beverage remain hot and fresh for many hours. Thermal pots are also capable of retaining uniform temperature throughout. Insulated pots are preferred to glass carafe. Again a cone shaped filter bowl is better than a flat based one as it will facilitate uniform flow of coffee. Better consistency of coffee is another advantage of the cone-shaped filter bowl. Some of the coffee makers are incorporated with programmable timers to facilitate commencement of the process at a specific time. Once the coffee grounds and water are mixed in the proper proportion and the timer is set at specific time, the brew will be made ready at the required time.
Large families and commercial establishments should opt for coffee makers with large water storage reservoirs and proportionally large coffee pots. Machines suitable for bulk consumption are available in the markets. There are machines with charcoal filters to purify water. It should be kept in mind that the quality of coffee depends on the quality of water used. It is better to ensure that the coffee maker is provided with charcoal filter even if the water available is of good quality. Any deterioration in the quality of water which may occur accidentally will spoil the quality of the beverage and hence this precaution. Pause and serve feature is ideal, as it may take time to complete the brewing cycle due to inadequate water temperature. Another precaution to maintain water temperature is to choose metal (stainless steel) housing. It is needless to mention that quality of the coffee grounds used in the process should be of superior quality to ensure best result.
These are some of the important factors that contribute towards brewing a perfect coffee. The prospective buyers of coffee machines have to ensure that the chosen machines have all important features that are pointed out herein.
