Is Espresso Considered Gourmet Coffee?

Although espresso coffee becomes more and more popular as one of the mainstream coffee types, there seems to be many misconceptions about the basic question of what is it and how different it is compared to the conventional gourmet coffee. More importantly, the question is whether it is categorized as gourmet coffee.

Many people expect that to have that perfect cup, you need to have specific espresso type of gourmet coffee beans for that special espresso cuppa, a particular blend or a special expensive espresso coffee maker. Both of which are not true.

In fact, it emerges from a holistic process. You need to get the right type of gourmet beans that suits your palate, fully roasted and grounded just before your brewing process. With your espresso coffee maker, you pressure steam to brew that perfect cup.

Making espresso coffee is art, drinking it is the epitome of art. The brewing only take 30 seconds at best, and when completed correctly with quality beans, you can expect a rich dark golden cream layer on the surface. Drinking it is very much like a coffee ritual. You savour and overwhelm all your senses with the permeating aroma and holding the nicely warmed cup and saucer, you gulp down the adrenaline inducing elixir in 4 mouthfuls.

A lot of people think that putting sugar into it is not an accepted and hence drink it plain. In fact, they do use sugar in some parted Europe, but espresso connoisseurs prefer to drink theirs without addictive, to savour the original taste.

So if you ask if espresso is gourmet coffee, the short answer is yes. With the right gourmet beans, proper roasting and grinding, a real coffee maker to steam press it, you will get the best gourmet espresso coffee. And do not forget warm your cup and saucer too.
