Energy Efficient Coffee Machines

Energy consumption in a coffee machine was not considered as a serious issue in the past. The general perception is that coffee machines consume only limited power and as such it cannot make significant impact on the user power consumption bill. But in the recent past many European countries started addressing this issue. It is reported that in Switzerland, for example sixty percent of the households are having coffee machines and energy consumption is becoming a concern for the State as well as for the consumers. When energy conservation became a matter of universal concern, many countries have initiated discussions on the matter. Studies reveal that energy consumption rate of coffee machines are increasing due to many reasons. To reduce the energy consumption it is imperative that suitable steps are to be taken both by the users and the machine manufacturers.

An important reason for increasing power consumption by the coffee machines in the households is that the users Do not turn off the machine as soon as the drink is ready. Machines are often left on standby. The maintenance of the machine in standby mode is to be constantly ready at any time. Another reason is to keep water or hot drinks and fresh for hours. In the case of coffee machines in offices or commercial establishments, which are activated during working hours. Studies organized on this theme have shown that classical>espresso machine consumes more power than "A" class oven or A++ refrigerator.

The State authorities as well as the Non-government organizations are now thinking in terms of implementing energy level stipulations for this one similar to those applicable for other energy consuming household or commercial appliances. In many countries actions are initiated to enact laws in this context. In the meanwhile many manufacturers are now improving the technologies to make the coffee machines more energy efficient. Techniques are being developed to effect switching off power automatically as soon as the required quantity of coffee is dispensed by the machine. The newly designed machines maintain minimum temperature when they are in standby mode. Insulation provided to the boilers are now strengthened to reduce wastage of heat by radiation. Another method adopted to save energy is to make provisions for heating only sufficient quantity of water required. In the conventional machines entire water in the tank will be heated every time the users make coffee irrespective of the quantity.

Many machines are now being introduced in the markets with reduced power consumption. The message of energy conservation is reaching the manufacturers as well as the consumers. Green coffee machines are becoming popular among the public as energy is now an expensive commodity.
