How to Clean Your Coffee Maker

Coffee makers get dirty over time. Coffee residue, mineral deposits from hard water, oils from grounds, dust, and other contaminants get in to your machine. This reduces the life of your appliance, and it also makes your coffee taste bad. To get rid of this bad taste and keep your coffee pot in good working order, it's important to clean your coffee machine. Regular cleaning will increase the life of your coffee brewer, and it will also make your coffee taste better!

The most common type of coffee pot found in homes is a drip coffee machine. These types of coffee brewers can't go in the dishwasher, but they're still easy to clean. Here's how: mix a solution of one part water and one part vinegar, as much as the amount of Joe you regularly brew. Run the water and vinegar mixture through the machine on the normal brewing cycle. If your machine is very dirty, you might need to do this step twice, with clean water and vinegar each time. Next, run the machine on a regular cycle with plain water. This will rinse out the machine.

The water and vinegar mixture will clean out all the inside parts of your coffee pot, removing mineral stains as well as oil residue from the grounds. Vinegar is a great cleaner since it's cheap, easily available, and it does a good job, too. For other types of coffee maker, you might need to clean differently. Some parts will fit in the dishwasher, which is a good way to clean these. Others may need to be hand washed or scrubbed with hot water and soap.
