In this article you will learn the most popular types of home espresso machines and how to determine which is right for you. If you care to make great espresso in the comfort of your own home for as little as $200...read on.
All the machines discussed here will be of the pump variety. That is, an electric pump is used to generate the correct steam pressure. The other varieties of espresso machine are the lever or piston machine, the steam machine, and the stove top (moka pot). None of these produce the desired result we are going to discuss here or they require too much skill or effort to be considered appropriate for the novice.
The pump type espresso machines fall into 3 categories. They are:
Semi-automatic
Automatic
Super-automatic
Semi-automatic
This describes the most basic pump machine. Everything is done manually with the exception of the steam pressure. You grind the beans manually. You fill the basket manually. You turn the pump on and off manually. I personally have the Saeco Aroma which I have had for about 2 years now. With the minimum of features, these are the simplest and cheapest way to bring an espresso maker into your home.
Automatic
This is the next step up from the Semi-auto machine. On this machine you can select the strength or volume of shot of espresso you desire. The machine automatically generates and controls the amount of steam and water to achieve that desired strength.
Super-automatic
This is the top of the line variety of espresso machine, in terms of features. It does everything for you including grind the beans. So, you simply tell the machine what strength or volume of shot you desire and press go. It grinds the beans and delivers the goods to your cup.
